The Safer Internet Week between 8-13 February is being organised for the seventh time in 2010. The highlight of the week is the Safer Internet Day celebrated in Finland and around the world on Tuesday, 9 February 2010. The aim of the Safer Internet Day and Safer Internet Week is to educate everyone on how to use the Internet safely and in accordance with netiquette. In 2010, the project’s specific target group includes primary school teachers and pupils. The main topics this year include posting photos online (‘Think B4 U post’) and online bullying.
Monday, 8 February
The opening event of the Safer Internet Week in restaurant Pörssi in Helsinki starts at 5 p.m, by invitation only. Opening speeches by Minister of Communications Suvi Lindén and the Ombudsman for Children in Finland Maria Kaisa Aula. Additional topics include:
• Presentation of the results of the research on Online photo sharing by research team leader Lotta Nivari, InterQuest
• The Safer Social Networking Principles for the EU - what's included, and what happened after the agreement’s signature? presented by Juhani Lassila, Director of Communications, Sulake
• The police online tip-off service introduced by Police Chief Inspector Robin Lardot, the Police Administration
Tuesday, 9 February Safer Internet Day
The Safer Internet Day will organise an Internet safety event in cooperation with its partner school Hakalan koulu in the city of Hyvinkää. During the Safer Internet Day, pupils will listen to morning assembly, organised by fourth graders, on the theme of online bullying, as well as taking part in the Safer Internet Day quiz and attending the games workshop. At the end of the day, all pupils will attend a concert by Finnish group Paukkumaissi.
Various events will be organised in primary schools around Finland.
Chat session with the police in Habbo Hotel and IRC-Galleria communities Online police officer Mane will be chatting in Habbo between 5-5:45 p.m., http://www.habbo.fi/community/celebrity_visits, and in the IRC-Galleria’s Safer Internet Day community between 18-19, http://irc-galleria.net/community/2048555-tietoturvapäivä.
The family-oriented magazine Meidän Perhe and the Microsoft Corporation will present the results of their joint research on virtual parenting.
Volunteer Internet safety partners from Microsoft will visit primary schools and upper secondary schools in Tampere to talk to pupils about how to use the Internet safely and in accordance with netiquette. These visits are part of the Godparent partnership service included in the Safer Internet Day project, providing primary schools with free-of-charge expert lectures in support of online safety education.
Wednesday, 10 February
The online safety work of the Safer Internet Day project will be introduced at the University of Tampere’s Department of Teacher Education located in Hämeenlinna.
The Youth and the Internet Seminar. This free-of-charge seminar organised through cooperation between the Finnish Internet Association, the Finnish Information Processing Association, the Association for Local and Regional Authorities, and the Safer Internet Day project is targeted at parents and open to everyone. Thursday, 11 February
Information Security Seminar at the Helsinki Fair Centre. Organised with the cooperation of Cisco, F-Secure and TeliaSonera Finland, the seminar is part of the Safer Internet Week. Saturday, 13 February
Public event in Koskikeskus shopping centre in Tampere between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feel free to drop by and ask about how to use the Internet safely and in accordance with netiquette, receive tips on media education, or explore a variety of materials. Experts from the partnership network of the Safer Internet Day project will participate. Take part in the quiz and win an Xbox. The event is hosted by Ville from the TV-show Galaxi.
