Common Internet sense will again be the theme of the Safer Internet Day

The Safer Internet Day project promotes the safe and sensible use of the Internet in Finland. The annual Safer Internet Day will be held this year on Tuesday 12 February 2008, on the same day as in the rest of Europe. The entire week commencing Monday 11 February will be Information Security Week.

Consumers and comprehensive school children are the particular target group of the theme day. The theme of the Safer Internet Day 2008 is to encourage ordinary Internet users in the home to use services on the Net in a more versatile and daring way. At the same time, users will be reminded of how their own actions can make using the Internet safer.

A new Checklist for smart Internet use on the Tietotuvaopas.fi Internet site

The Tietoturvaopas.fi Internet site is the online service of the Safer Internet Day, providing information to consumers in a clear way to help them get to grips with information security. The new Checklist for smart Internet use has been published on the site. The concise checklist aimed at consumers helps explain what issues should be borne in mind when conducting business on the Internet. The guidelines highlight:

· what kind of issues should be borne in mind when dealing with money or confidential information on the Net

· what to do with suspicious attachments, e-mails offering products/services and circulars

· that copyrights are also valid on the Internet, and

· that the computer’s operating system, virus protection program and firewall must be up to date.

The checklist is a summary of matters about which users can find out more on the renewed Tietoturvaopas.fi site.

Online gamers: a card game on the rules of the Internet

The Tietoturvakoulu.fi site is the Safer Internet Day project’s support site on media education and education on information security aimed at school children, teachers and parents.

The Tietoturvakoulu site has released a new game for online gamers. With the help of the game, children and young people can get to know about the rules for using the Net, protecting their own data, carrying out business online and respecting copyright. At the end of the game, users can take part in a competition, and the winners will receive their prizes in April. The prizes include a laptop computer and games console.

Schools can still request an "information security godparent" free of charge via the Tietoturvakoulu.fi site, for example for lessons or parents' evenings. Comprehensive schools have been supplied with information and material relating to the Safer Internet Day as before.
