Connections

Connecting to the Internet requires a data transfer connection which enables the use of material and services on networks. Internet connections include, for example, ADSL broadband connections and modem connections.

A broadband connection requires the following devices and software:

  • Broadband subscription
  • Network terminal device
  • Sufficiently powerful computer
  • Network interface (wired or wireless connection).

Safe broadband use requires also up-to-date anti-virus and firewall software which are available as software packages or services provided by operators. To ensure security, it is also important to update the operating system regularly.

Wireless networks

In a wireless network (e.g. WLAN) the connection between a computer and a base station is formed by transmitting data using radio waves. The base station is connected to a fixed network through cable.

Things to consider when using a wireless local area network (WLAN):

  • The WLAN coverage area is often wider than was considered when the network was planned.
  • WLANs that are unencrypted and do not require user identification are readily available for anyone in the coverage area to use and listen to.
  • A WLAN that is unencrypted or poorly protected can easily be exploited for e.g. cyber crimes. The tracks will lead to the innocent subscriber under whose name the network connection is registered. In addition, unauthorised use takes up resources from authorised use.
  • The Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority has published instructions on the security of wireless local area networks (WLAN). The guidelines are available in Finnish on the website www.cert.fi and can be used by both companies and consumers.

Mobile phones

Modern mobile phones, smartphones, can also be used for e-mail and accessing the Internet. For now, threats against mobile phones are minor compared to those against fixed networks and computers. Read more about information security for mobile phones at www.ficora.fi/mobiiliturva/english.
