Security programs are programs or software that aim at protecting the computer from external information security risks such as viruses, worms, break-in attempts through networks and other harmful use. Security software includes e.g. anti-virus software, anti-spyware software, firewall, child lock software, Internet filters and protection against data system break-ins.
An anti-virus program does not prevent hacking attempts aimed at a computer. To prevent data break-ins and network attacks, a firewall is required. A firewall is usually a program installed on a computer that controls both incoming and outgoing communications. Many ADSL devices used in broadband connections also include a built-in firewall which complements the firewall software installed on the computer.
Anti-virus software or services provide protection against viruses and worms. Anti-virus software and services are available from Internet operators, computer stores and the Internet.
Anti-virus software examines e-mail messages and files that are stored in or handled by your computer as well as files that you download from the Internet with a web browser, and attempts to remove all malicious files.
Make sure that the anti-virus software on your computer is constantly updated. If the software does not have automatic updates, you have to update the software manually.
The updates should always be downloaded from the website of the anti-virus company or received using automatic updates.
Anti-malware programs are extended features of anti-virus software. In addition to protection against viruses, the software prevents spyware, adware and other malicious contents from accessing your computer. Anti-malware software includes also the opportunity to control the programs that are running on your computer and use outbound connections to networks. This way, for example the use of peer-to-peer networks can be restricted.
The purpose of a child lock is to prevent a user from accessing websites that include, for instance, adult, racist or violent content and gambling. With child locks, parents can control the children's Internet use and prevent inappropriate activities on the computer. A child lock can also be extended to limit Internet use only to certain times of the day.
Data encryption means securing data stored on the hard disk of a computer or on portable memory media by using encryption software. Encrypting personal data or other sensitive data is relevant especially when using a portable computer.
Encrypting a connection means a method with which a user of a computer can safely access services on the Internet. Such services include, among others, online banks and shops. In practice, the data is encrypted with a built-in feature of the browser.
