Instant messengers

Instant messengers are programs that connect two or more computers. Through the connection, users can send text messages and files, transmit audio and video and even share applications. In Finland, the most common instant messenger programs include Microsoft Live Messenger (formerly MSN Messenger) and the Jabber-based Google Talk. Apple's iChat can be used with both the America Online (AOL) network and Jabber. Some Internet telephony software, such as Skype, can also be used as instant messengers.

When using instant messenger programs, keep in mind a few simple security instructions:

  • Make sure you have the latest version of the instant messenger program you use.
  • Modify the instant messenger settings so that you allow contact only from people you know.
  • When chatting with a friend through an instant messenger, you may receive a link to a website. Click on the link only if you are certain it is safe. Displaying links can usually be prohibited in instant messengers. If you wish not to receive links, block them from being displayed.
  • Instant messenger programs can also be used for transferring files. Always save the files you receive first on your computer's hard disk before opening them. This way, the anti-virus software can check the file for viruses or other malicious software code.
